Big Yellow Door, North Campus
New Delhi
Big Yellow Door was on my wishlist since forever. Simply because I had heard so much about this place from so many foodies around me, that I just had to be there to experience it for myself.
BYD, as they call it is located in Vijaynagar, which is a part of the University of Delhi, North Campus Area. This meant that for BYD the target customer base has always been University students. This is what contributes to its young and multi cuisine menu, and its surprisingly cheap prices. We were a group of 3 and as we reached BYD, we were shocked to see more than 20 people sitting on benches outside waiting for their turns to be seated. Honestly I have never seen such popularity for any place lately. We also had to wait for about 40 minutes to get a table inside.
We hurriedly walked to our table that had been kept ready for us. BYD is a very small and cozy cafe. Not big in its size at all, but their interiors and very cool and chick. They have walls that give the effect of unfinished bricks stacked on top of each other. They have one wall that has only sticky notes of neon colors, on which various customers have given their reviews about this place. Very relaxing, warm and comfortable interiors, giving a youthful feeling.
So we looked through the menu and were pleased to see how they have incorporated various cuisines, from pizzas and pastas to burgers and sandwiches. We ordered a Creamy Cheese sauce Pasta and Cheesy Nachos Mexicana to begin our meal. Along with this we ordered a Kit Kat shake, a Rocky Road Shake and a Chocolate Brownie Shake.
The food arrived rather quickly. The pasta was creamy and cheesy as the name suggests. Sinfully cheesy I can say.It was aptly seasoned and the thick white sauce was just wow. The Nachos were just as sinful as the pasta. As cheese dripped from each and every piece. They were served with a yummy salsa dip, which was tangy and spicy, all at once. The two things gave a great start to our meal.
Then came our shakes. The Kit-Kat shake was very sweet and chocolaty. The taste of Kit Kate chocolate was pronounced. Rocky Road shake was filled with tit-bits of what I think were Oreo Cookies. Yummy in taste, thick and the biscuit crumbs were not yet soft which showed the freshness in their preparations. The chocolate brownie shake was with thick consistency, creamy , chocolaty and absolutely delicious. Bites of brownies would rush into the mouth making it a total treat!
Once were done with the starters, we ordered our main course. We ordered a Tipsy-liscious Pasta, a Popeyes Love Pizza and a BYD Cheese Bomb burger.
The Tipsy-liscious Pasta was probably their take on the epic "Penne with Vodka" served at Big Chill, but let me tell you that for me, this pasta overshadowed Big Chill. It was creamy, flavorful, saucy and scrumptious. It was a mix of tomato and cheese sauce with just a dash of vodka to add "that" Zing to it. Pasta was cooked well, but not overcooked, and what was great was the proportion of sauces they had chosen.
The Popeyes Love Pizza was a thin crust pizza served on a wooden platter. It was topped with olives, spinach and onions. Now frankly, I was skeptical because I had never tried spinach in a pizza. But, to my surprise, the pizza just turned out to be a wonderful experiment.
Nonetheless, the highlight of the day was undoubtedly their BYD Cheese Bomb Burger. Served in a basket lined with paper, some chips and a chilly mayo dip, this burger was half opened when it came, with BYD written on the patty with melted cheese.
So once you cover it back and bite into it, the cheese gushes into your mouth and drips all over.
Heavenly is what I can say. By far the best burger experience I have had to date.
After stuffing ourselves up so much, we just could not head towards the desserts and called for the bill.
And guess what, all we paid for so much food was Rs 1000.
So 5 Food items and 3 Shakes for just this much.
I would not overestimate the place and hence would mention that their servings were not huge, but to me it is a blessing in disguise so that one can order a variety of items from the menu.
All in All:
Service: 5
Taste: 5
Value for money: 5
Ambiance: 4.5
